i want to help move ramah
"I attended and worked as a counselor at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires from 2004-2012. In the summer of 2011, I was a bunk counselor. During staff week, a member of my staff came to davening (prayer service) wearing a kippah with images of both the Israeli and Palestinian flags. After davening our Rosh Edah (the head of our age division) sat our staff down to tell us that images of the Palestinian flag are offensive and triggering. He demanded that my co-staff memeber no longer wear this kippah at camp. This is just one example of the erasure of the Palestinian narrative from the dialogue around Israel at Camp.
I want to be clear that I LOVE Camp Ramah. My parents met at Ramah, I made some of my closest friends at Camp, and I think the institution of camp offers really special experiences. It is precisely because I feel this way that I am sharing this story. I want to help move Ramah to a place where we can have more honest conversation about the Occupation and the ways in which we help bolster it." -Talia Kula, Camp Ramah in the Berkshires
